Catching Up on Pet Books: A Dog's Journey to a Comphrensive Cat ...

By Steve Dale, Thursday at 6:35 am

A lifetime journey with a dog of a life, a great training book to enhance your relationship with your pup, a cat book that has it all - and much more. Check out a half dozen recent reads:

Codi's Journey
"Codi's Journey: An Inspiring and Heartwarming Story About an Amazing Best Friend," by Jeff Maziarek (Simple Spirit Enterprises, Villa Park, IL, 2010; $15). Jeff didn't plan on this new best friend; it just seemed right, though. The lessons learned taught Jeff about himself, and served to strengthen their bond. Their relationship was intense, fun and loving, but time has a way of marching on. As age and illness began to catch up, Codi may have slowed down but continued to teach important lessons. Jeff's best friend and teacher was a dog named Codi. This memoir will resonate with anyone who's loved and lost a dog.
Perfect Puppy in 7 Days
"Perfect Puppy in 7 Days: How to Start Your Puppy Off Right," by Dr. Sophia Yin (Cattle Dog Publishing, Davis, CA, 2011; $19.95). You can stop behavior problems before they develop, and at the same time develop a trusting relationship with your puppy. By nipping potential problems in the bud, you have little or no reason to be angry at your pooch. Yin also explains how to deal with issues as they creep up. Like all of the Dr. Yin books, this one has lots of pix to illustrate exactly what she means. This is one of the best puppy "how to" books to land on my desk in some time.
The Complete Cat's Meow
"The Complete Cat's Meow: Everything You Need to Know About Caring for Your Cat," by Darlene Arden (Wiley Publishing, New York, NY, 2011; $19.99). Complete is right; this is the most complete, on-target cat book I've read in a very long time. It's all here, from what to do when you bring a kitty home to routine and emergency health care, dealing with an array of common behavior issues, leash and harness training and how to give a cat a pill.
The Devine Life of Animals
"The Divine Life of Animals: One Man's Quest to Discover Whether the Souls of Animals Live On," by Ptolemy Tomkins (Crown Publishing, New York, NY, 2010; $29.99). In the poem often recited when a pet dies called "The Rainbow Bridge," our pets are viewed as waiting for us at the gates of heaven. Imagine the reunion. Wouldn't that be nice? Is it possible we will one day see our pets again, or that in some way their souls can live on? To answer that question, the author discusses whether or not animals have souls. He also explores how various cultures differ in their views on such topics. After winding through all available evidence, the author ultimately offers his views.
The Best of Today's DOGG
"The Best of Today's DOGG," by Guy Gilchrist (FastPencil, Inc, Campbell, CA, 2010; $19.95). Gilchrist has an amazing list of credits, including 48 children's books, contributions to "The Muppet's," and designing characters for Loony Tunes and Tom and Jerry. It's a good thing for dogs that he's brought his whimsical sense of humor to this cartoon book. All sales benefit animal rescue and adoption.
Hermit Crabs
"Hermit Crabs," by Carol Frishmann (TFH Publications, Neptune City, NJ, 2011; $8.95). Allergic to dogs and cats, or seeking a pet that's easy to care for? Hermit crabs are all the rage. In fact, driving that craze are crab shells painted with football team logos and cartoon characters. In fact, Frishmann is concerned that some people only buy the crabs for the designs, and never learn proper care. She does an excellent job of explaining exactly what crabs need.
