"Our study demonstrates tumour instability in clinically used markers throughout tumour progression. We saw, for example, that one in three breast cancer patients alter oestrogen (ER) or progesterone (PR) hormone receptor status, and 15% of patients change human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, or HER2, status during the course of disease," she will say.

ER and PR receptor status tests show whether one or both of these hormones is helping to grow the cancer. Cancer that is hormone positive can be treated by hormone-suppressing drugs, whereas hormone negative cancers may respond to other types of treatment. Hormone negative patients are normally tested for HER2. If this test is positive, treatment such as Herceptin will usually be given.

The researchers studied breast cancer patients in the Stockholm healthcare region who had a recurrence of the disease between January 1, 1997 and December 31, 2007. Information on ER status in several relapses from the same individual was assessed in 119 patients: 33.6% of patients had changes in tumour status between the different sites of relapse (local, loco-regional and metastases) whereas 36.1% of the patients were stable ER positive, and 30.3% were stable ER negative. Sixteen percent of patients changed from ER positive to negative during the course of their disease, 12.6% changed from negative to positive, and 5% altered back and forth throughout tumour progression.

In the PR group, 30.2% of patients altered their hormone receptor status, with the majority changing from positive to negative. "Until now we thought that these predictive markers remained stable during the course of the cancer. But it is now apparent that these breast tumours markers, which are used to decide the best treatment for the patient, change as the tumour progresses and this significantly affects the way patients respond to particular therapies. This has important implications for the future management of the disease," says Dr. Lindstr?m.

The researchers now intend to carry out a prospective study in which they will follow a group of breast cancer patients and examine the standard clinical markers throughout their tumour progression. "With cancer treatments becoming more and more efficacious and targeted to specific groups, it is particularly important that the correct treatment is given throughout the disease," says Dr. Lindstr?m. "An additional advantage of carrying out regular biopsies would be that they could detect other primary cancers, or benign lesions, which could spare patients inappropriate or unnecessary therapies."

Dr. Lindstr?m and colleagues think that their findings could possibly be applied to cancers other than breast. "We believe that tumour instability may be due to many different factors, for instance the choice of therapy and other host (patient) characteristics, and that some inherent tumour behaviour may well be shared by different tumour types. This is a promising area of research with important implications for patient management," she will conclude.

"This finding is of major clinical importance because it shows that many cancer patients who relapse do not receive optimal treatment for their disease. While the price of regular biopsies may seem high for both patients and healthcare systems, in the long run they may avoid inappropriate and costly treatments and, even more importantly, may be the basis for selecting more effective treatments for individual patients," said Professor Michael Baumann, ECCO President.

ESMO spokesman Professor Fabrice Andr?, from the Institut Gustave-Roussy, Villejuif, France, said: "In this study of a large series of patients whose cancer recurred, the investigators have shown molecular changes in the tumours of more than one third. This further underlines the importance of taking regular biopsies in patients who relapse so that they can be sure of getting the most appropriate treatment, and of running trials looking at the relationship between the profiles of metastatic lesions and new agents specifically targeted at them."

Wall St rises, uncertainty keeps markets volatile (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stocks edged higher on Friday on talk the European Central Bank might add liquidity to shore up the region's vulnerable banking system but persisting worries about a global recession kept markets volatile.

Concerns about the sovereign debt crisis in Europe have contributed to recent equity losses, with both the Dow and S&P off more than 6 percent, and the Nasdaq down more than 5 percent this week.

In morning trade, stocks seesawed between gains and losses as investors jumped at buy or sell buttons on any indication from policymakers suggesting additional steps to support Europe's financial system.

Wall Street opened lower but later reversed course, with the Nasdaq rising as much as 1 percent

One such comment came from Ewald Nowotny, European Central Bank Governing Council member, who said it might be advisable for the ECB to add more liquidity into the banking system.

"People are looking for a silver bullet of policymakers stepping in to rescue banks, and given the size of recent moves in stocks, any rumor will cause people to step into the market," said Paul Brigandi, vice president of trading at Direxion Funds in New York.

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) was down 3.52 points, or 0.03 percent, at 10,730.31. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) was up 3.79 points, or 0.34 percent, at 1,133.35. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) was up 14.58 points, or 0.59 percent, at 2,470.25.

Despite its losses this week, the S&P was above an August 8 low of 1,119, which technical analysts view as a support level.

Gains in the Nasdaq were helped by strength in Internet names Yahoo Inc (YHOO.O), up 4 percent to $14.52, and Ctrip.com International Ltd (CTRP.O), adding nearly 5 percent to $34.26.

Ctrip, a Chinese travel website, announced a share buyback on Thursday. Earlier this month, Yahoo replaced its chief executive and has been subject to takeover talk.

The S&P consumer staples sector (.GSPS) was the weakest, falling 0.6 percent. Food and drink companies were the poorest performers, with General Mills Inc (GIS.N) down 1.9 percent to $38.75 and Coca-Cola Co (KO.N) off 1.2 percent to $67.02.

Hewlett-Packard Co (HPQ.N) was down 4.1 percent to $21.86 a day after Meg Whitman, the former head of EBay Inc (EBAY.O) was named to run the computer and printer maker. The move was met with criticism of the company's board, which has been blamed for a series of recent missteps.

China base metals demand growing 10 percent more than GDP (Reuters)

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) ? Demand growth for base metals in China is exceeding its GDP growth rate by 10 percent, and will keep growing, Fan Shunke, the president of China Non-ferrous Techno-Economic Research Institute said on Wednesday.

"Base metals demand is about 10 percent higher than the GDP growth rate," Fan, who is also chairman of state-backed research firm Antaike's board, told Reuters on the sidelines of a China Metal Forum in Stockholm.

Gross domestic product growth was around 9 percent this year, Fan said at the event organized by Antaike and research body Raw Materials Group.

"In the next five-year period the demand for base metals will keep growing," he said, although he acknowledged the global economic slowdown would have an impact on China's economy.

"But with regard to the demand for base metals it will not be affected because most of the base metals are consumed in China, not exported," he added. "In the industrialization of China, the demand for raw materials is necessary."

China's imports of refined copper surged 21.2 percent in August compared to the previous month to reach their highest level since January as improved arbitrage spurred spot buying from the world's top consumer of the metal.

As the economy deteriorates in the western world, many metals producers are looking to demand in China to provide a buffer against the downturn.

The International Monetary Fund on Tuesday warned of the risk of the severe repercussions on global growth of Europe's worsening sovereign debt crisis, and a painfully slow U.S. recovery.

It said without action those economies could tip back into recession.

It also trimmed its forecasts of economic growth for China and other Asian economies due partly to slower growth in the rest of the world, although China's economy is still expected to grow a brisk 9.5 percent this year and 9 percent in 2012.

DOWNTURN

Swedish copper and zinc miner and smelter Boliden's (BOL.ST) Chief Executive Lennart Evrell voiced concern about the demand for metals with "a downturn inevitable in Europe and the United States."

He told the China Metal Forum it was likely China's high growth rate would moderate, "but we should keep in mind that the share of the world demand in China is at the same time bigger. So if you model that in, we see that there is still a very favorable impact on the global demand."

"I think the bottom line is clear - the western world will keep a constant consumption year after year at best, and be exposed to the normal business cycles. Whereas the fast growing countries...will be very very fundamental for the metal demand in the world."

China's copper raw materials imports rose almost 50 percent between 2006 and 2010, despite the financial crisis, Li Yusheng, a senior analyst at Antaike, said.

In China's 12th five-year economic plan, from 2011 to 2015, copper mining capacity will continue to expand, he said, but the country will still have to import the metal to make up a shortfall.

China's daily apparent demand for refined copper surged 18.8 percent month on month in August and 14.4 percent from a year earlier on a 23 percent rise in net imports and record output, after a 4.3 percent fall in July, Reuters calculations based on official Chinese data showed on Wednesday.

Goalkeeper Frank Rost made three saves for his second shutout of the season in his return to the lineup after missing three games due to a torn quadriceps.

New York earned just its second road triumph of the season (2-4-9) after an 0-3-5 stretch.

Rodgers was making his first start, and just second appearance, since recovering from a heel he injured July 9.

"I didn't feel as sharp as I usually do, but you're only going to get that with match fitness," Rodgers said. "I've got 45 minutes under my belt now, which is big for me. It's just so massive to be back playing and I'm just so happy with the win."

New York coach Hans Backe was impressed.

"He was phenomenal," Backe said. "He was away for two and a half months, but his energy, his character, we have missed him so much for these 8-10 weeks."

FC Dallas, 1-4-1 in its last six MLS games, was missing top goal-scorer Brek Shea, who was serving a one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation.

"He's a very good player," Hyndman said. "I think he showed the quality of combining, the quality of holding the ball, breaking loose and then distribution. Probably the best part of his game is finishing and tonight, it just wasn't going to be there."

The Red Bulls also were missing their leading scorer, Thierry Henry, who didn't make the trip to Texas due to inflammation of his Achilles tendon. He shares the MLS lead with 12 goals.

"He's been sore in his Achilles for a long time now," Backe said. "We know when we go into three games in one week, he would have been injured for the two home games. He probably could have played, but probably not 100 percent and I think it's just ridiculous to get players out there who can't do 100 percent."

Rodgers converted a nice feed from Juan Agudelo for his seventh goal of the season. Agudelo made the run into the right side of the penalty area before sliding a pass across the box, past Dallas defender George John, to the charging Rodgers for a 2-yard chip shot past scrambling goalkeeper Kevin Hartman.

"I saw Juan Agudelo make a run, the ball broke through to him, and I just had to make sure I was in the 6-yard box to score," Rodgers said. "The ball came in, it seemed to jump up a bit, and sometimes when you hit them perfectly, the keeper saves them, but it sort of rolled up my leg and went in."

FC Dallas observed a moment of silence before the game and put on a halftime tribute in honor of broadcaster and former player Bobby Rhine, who died Sept. 5 from a heart attack. He was 35.
