Fomalhaut's giant exoplanet may be small lava world

One of the first exoplanets to be imaged directly is not the plain Jane it seemed. Instead, it may be a rocky planet covered with lava.

Most planets are too small, dim and close to their parent stars to be photographed. But Hubble Space Telescope images from 2004 and 2006 revealed a Jupiter-like dot around the star Fomalhaut, which lies 25 light years away. The apparent planet, named Fomalhaut?b, appeared inside a gap in a dusty disc surrounding the star, suggesting it had carved out the space during its orbits.

Early on, though, the dot exhibited behaviour unbecoming of a planet, dropping in brightness by a factor of two between 2004 and 2006.

"It immediately struck me as weird," says Markus Janson of Princeton University. "I thought something more complex must be going on here than, 'There's light from a planet.'"

Now Janson and his colleagues have analysed new infrared observations ? the most sensitive yet ? made by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. They found nothing at the wavelengths where a Jupiter-sized planet should be brightest.

"There's really no wiggle room left for claiming that Fomalhaut?b is a directly imaged [Jupiter-sized] planet," says Ray Jayawardhana of the University of Toronto, Canada.

Spitzer is not sensitive enough to detect objects smaller than Jupiter, opening up a Pandora's box of new possibilities.

Small, small world?

Fomalhaut b's discoverer, Paul Kalas of the University of California, Berkeley, thinks it might be an exo-Saturn ? a ringed planet about a third the size of Jupiter. It would be too small for Spitzer to see, but would be brighter than expected for its size at visible wavelengths because its ring system would reflect its star's light.

"We have in our solar system an example of what we're proposing for Fomalhaut?b," Kalas says. "That's not proof of anything, but it's a plausibility argument."

Janson thinks the bright speck orbiting Fomalhaut is more likely to be a transient dust cloud kicked up by colliding asteroids. That would explain why its brightness has faded and suggests it will only get fainter with time.

However, there is another, more brutal possibility. Fomalhaut?b might be a rocky planet up to 10 times the mass of the Earth that is being beaten to a molten mess by incoming meteoroids, Janson says. The violence would make it bright at visible wavelengths, but as its surface cools, it should fade ? in line with the observations.

"You could have this super-Earth-type planet being very, very heavily pummelled, so hot that its surface melts, and it becomes basically a lava planet," Janson says. "In principle you could then get something small enough and hot enough [to] explain what you observe."

If that is borne out, rather than being the planet that wasn't, Fomalhaut?b could be the smallest exoplanet to have its picture taken.

Love tip of the day: How does love happen? | Relationship Coach ...

If you want to feel love, then you have to give it! As soon as someone in a couple pulls love away the problems start.

You see, love only happens when we give it. Most people are under the illusion that people give us love. What actually happens is we translate their words or actions into a feeling. If we agree their action equals love to us, we then feel safe to give them a loving action back.

  • It is at the point we give love back is the point when our love is felt.

Your partner does not have magical powers to make you have a feeling, we create all our own feelings based on our reactions to others. We all know this is true because in past relationships we know we started to feel that something was wrong. So if our partners at that time tried to give us love, unless we agree it feels like love we wouldn?t give it back. The result was we didn?t feel love no matter how much they say they loved us.

So PLEASE don?t pull love away to punish your partner especially if you want to keep your relationship. It kills the relationship and puts you in a values conflict with you that bit-by-bit feels awful.

My advice don?t live in reaction, don?t wait to get love, if you want to feel love, GIVE IT!

Test it for yourself, go out to today and give a small act of love or kindness to everyone you meet and watch how you feel.

Better still, give love today to everyone, come back and tell us what happens in comments below.

US deficit tops $1 trillion 4 years in a row

By msnbc.com news services

A new budget report released Tuesday predicts the U.S. government will run a $1.1 trillion deficit in the fiscal year that ends in September, a slight dip from last year but still very high by any measure. A?previous estimate was for $973 billion.?

The Congressional Budget Office report also says that annual deficits will remain in the $1 trillion range for the next several years if Bush-era tax cuts slated to expire in December are extended, as commonly assumed. The CBO is a?non-partisan budget analyst for Congress.

If the CBO estimate for this year's deficit proves accurate, fiscal year 2012 would be the fourth consecutive year of federal budget deficits topping $1 trillion.?The shortfall registered $1.3 trillion in fiscal 2011, up from $1.29 trillion in 2010. It reached $1.42 trillion in 2009, the highest ever.

The report is yet another reminder of the perilous fiscal situation the government is in, but it is commonly assumed that little will be accomplished on the deficit issue during an election year.? ?

The study also predicts modest economic growth of 2 percent this year and forecasts that the unemployment rate will remain above 8 percent this year. That is based on an assumption that President Barack Obama will fail to win renewal of payroll tax cuts and jobless benefits by the end of next month.? ?

The CBO report projects the unemployment rate will gradually decline to around 7 percent by the end of 2015, before dropping to near 5.5 percent by the end of 2017.??Inflation and interest rates will remain low during the next few years.

The new figures also show that last summer's budget and debt pact has barely made a dent in the government's fiscal woes.? ?

The pact imposed $2.1 trillion in spending cuts over 10 years, but the latest estimates predict $11 trillion in accumulated deficits over the 2013-2022 time frame if the Bush-era cuts in taxes on income, investments, large estates and on families with children are renewed. Obama has proposed largely extending them, but allowing them to expire for upper-income taxpayers.? ?

The deficit would require the government to borrow 30 cents of every dollar it spends. Put another way, the deficit will reach 7 percent of the size of the economy, a slight dip from last year's 8.7 percent of gross domestic product.?

Vote: How would you close the budget gap?

The CBO report shows that the deficit dilemma would largely be solved if the tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003 -- and renewed in 2010 through the end of this year -- were allowed to lapse. Under that scenario, the deficit would drop to $585 billion in 2013 and to $220 billion in 2017.

Congress is expected to extend at least some of those tax cuts by the end of this year.?

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

(AP Photo/Russian Roscosmos space agency, File)

MOSCOW (AP) ? The head of Russia's space agency said Tuesday that cosmic radiation was the most likely cause of the failure of a Mars moon probe that crashed to Earth this month, and suggested that a low-quality imported component may have been vulnerable to the radiation.

The unmanned probe was to have gone to the Mars moon of Phobos, taken soil samples and brought them back. But it became stuck in Earth orbit soon after its launch on Nov. 9. It fell out of orbit on Jan. 15, reportedly off the coast of Chile, but no fragments have been found.

The failure was a severe embarrassment to Russia, and space agency head Vladimir Popovkin initially suggested it could have been due to foreign sabotage.

But Russian news agencies on Tuesday quoted him as saying an investigation showed the probable cause was "localized influence of heavily radiated space particles."

Popovkin, speaking in the city of Voronezh where the report was presented to Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, said two units of the Phobos-Ground probe's onboard computer system went into an energy-saving "restart" mode, apparently due to the radiation, while the craft was in its second orbital circuit.

It was not immediately clear why the units could not be brought out of that mode.

Popovkin was quoted as saying that some microchips used on the craft were imported and possibly of inadequate quality to resist radiation. He did not specify where the chips were manufactured.

Popovkin also said the craft's builder, Moscow-based NPO Lavochkin, should have taken into account the possibility of radiation interfering with the operation and said Lavochkin officials would face punishment for the oversight.

Russia's space program has suffered a series of notable failures in recent months, including the August crash of an unmanned ship that was to send supplies to the International Space Station. That crash forced the postponement of a manned launch to the ISS because the booster rocket that failed in the crash was similar to the ones used in manned missions.

On Tuesday, Russian news agencies reported that a manned launch to the ISS that had been scheduled for March 30 will be postponed for about 45 days because tests of the capsule showed flaws in its hermetic seals.
