HOUSTON (AP) ? Northwestern's comeback attempt came too late and doomed the Wildcats to yet another bowl loss.

Ryan Tannehill threw for 329 yards and a touchdown and Ben Malena ran for two more scores to lead Texas A&M to a 33-22 win over Northwestern on Saturday in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.

Northwestern hasn't won a bowl game since the 1949 Rose Bowl, a span of nine losses.

Heading into the game, players and coaches spoke of "getting the monkey off" their backs and ending the losing streak.

"We failed in that regard," quarterback Dan Persa said. "We let everyone down and we know it."

The Wildcats had dropped three close ones in the postseason before Saturday's loss, losing in overtime two years straight before last year's one touchdown loss to Texas Tech in the TicketCity Bowl.

Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald, who has coached the team in each of those recent bowls, said this loss wasn't any more difficult than the others.

"They all stink," he said. "They are all awful. It's frustrating. We will worry about that next postseason. We have to play more soundly. We have to execute more consistently."

The Aggies, which snapped a five-game bowl losing streak, were up 30-7 before Brian Peters intercepted Tannehill early in the fourth quarter and the Wildcats took advantage of that mistake when Kain Colter scored on a 1-yard run for Northwestern's first points since early in the second quarter. The 2-point conversion left A&M ahead 30-15.

Colter found Tim Riley in the corner of the end zone for on a 2-yard touchdown pass to get Northwestern within 30-22 with less than six minutes remaining.

Persa, who threw for 213 yards, said the difference on the two fourth-quarter drives was his offensive line's ability to win one-on-one battles and his doing a better job of getting rid of the ball.

Persa set an NCAA record for career completion percentage (73.6) by going 25 of 37 to end his career 460 of 633. He entered the game needing 19 attempts to meet the minimum standards to qualify for the record.

A&M responded with a clock-eating drive capped by a 31-yard field goal to secure the win after Northwestern cut the lead to eight.

"They made the plays that winners make," Fitzgerald said. "We ran out of time there at the end."

Senior Jeff Fuller, who has had a disappointing and injury-plagued year, had a key third down catch for 29 yards on that drive and finished with a season-high 119 yards receiving.

"It stings because we needed to ball back to ... try to win the game," Peters said of A&M's third down conversions on that drive.

Malena ran for 77 yards, filling in ably for Cyrus Gray, who missed his second straight game with a stress fracture in his left shoulder.

A&M won a bowl for the first time since a 28-9 victory over TCU after the 2001 season. That also came in Houston, when this game was called the Galleryfurniture.com bowl and played next door at the Astrodome.

Texas A&M erased a 7-3 second quarter deficit thanks to touchdowns by Malena and Fuller and a field goal by Randy Bullock to lead 20-7 at halftime.

Malena's second touchdown came on a 19-yard run early in the third quarter that made it 27-7. Another field goal by Bullock, this one from 47 yards, pushed A&M's advantage to 30-7.

"We hit a little lull in the first half," Fitzgerald said. "The guys were resilient, they responded and got momentum. We had it and were just one stop away. We were one third down pickup, one offside kick away."

The Wildcats alternated quarterbacks for much of the day with Persa leading the more traditional offense and Colter directing the wildcat offense. But neither player could generate much offense while often under heavy pressure from the Aggies, who finished with eight sacks.

Texas A&M's offense got rolling in the second quarter when Tannehill found Ryan Swope, who was a high school running back, on a short pass that he took 37 yards to the 1. Swope tight-roped the sideline and avoided a half dozen tacklers before he was brought down.

Malena scored a play later to put A&M on top 10-7.

Northwestern took a 7-3 lead in the second quarter when Venric Mark scored 2-yard option run.

Michael Finley Hopes To Return To The NBA

Michael Finley Hopes To Return To The NBA

David Butler II-US PRESSWIRE

Earlier this week a tweet was sent to HoopsHype.com Twitter account from a savvy old veteran by the name of Michael Finley and it read like this, ?U left me off the free agency list #notdoneyet.? The tweet was sent because Finley said that he could not find his name on the wbesites list of NBA free agents. Finley then followed up on the tweet by saying that he now feels 100% healthy and is ready to return to professional basketball preferably the NBA but not ruling out overseas options as well.

The last time Finley saw any NBA action was a year and a half ago when the Boston Celtics made their Finals run, eventually losing in seven games to the Los Angeles Lakers, in which he really had no affect on the outcome because of his limited playing time due to ankle problems. Finley answered questions about the ankle saying that when he went to Boston his ankle was not 100%. Finley added that after that season with the Celtics he got his ankle worked on, and that he now feels a lot better than he did during his time in Boston.

Like every veteran wishing to return to play at the highest level Finley?s number one option is to return to an NBA team but he also noted that he would not rule out the possibility of playing overseas or even the D-League. Finley has had multiple offers from two D-League teams the Marine Red Claws, and Texas Legends but said he would feel bad about playing their because he would be taking away an opportunity from a young player to gain exposure. Finley also added that he just wishes to return to basketball and that if the right situation comes up, possibly a player-coach, that he would take the opportunity.

Finley will be going to Dallas next week to spend some time with his former teammate Dirk Nowitzki. He also shedded some light on his relationship with Mavericks owner Mark Cuban saying that he still stays in touch with Cuban, and that they are still good friends. Maybe a reunion is soon to come.

Jet Propulsion Lab ushers in new year with moon-mapping project

At the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Ca?ada Flintridge, the New Year's celebration will have to wait ? until 2:05 p.m. Sunday, to be exact.

That's when the second of two NASA spacecraft is expected to enter the moon's orbit on a $496-million mission scientists hope will provide unprecedented insight into the interior composition of Earth's closest neighbor.

On Saturday afternoon, the first satellite constituting the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory successfully entered the moon's orbit after a 3 1/2-month trip from Earth.

The solar-powered GRAIL twins, each about the size of a washing machine, are expected to map the moon's gravitational field. The data will allow scientists to deduce the moon's structure down to its core and shed light on how Earth and the solar system's other rocky planets developed.

"Five billion years ago, the Earth was formed, and all the other terrestrial planets were formed, and the moon was formed," said David Lehman, GRAIL project manager at JPL. "But since that time, the Earth evolved ? there's earthquakes, there's erosion, there's lots of rain. And so when we study the Earth now, we really don't have a good feeling for what happened because it changed so much."

The GRAIL satellites will log some 12 million miles orbiting the moon over the three-month data collection phase, moving in tandem and separated by an average of 124 miles.

As they pass 34 miles above, mountains, craters and below-ground masses will cause changes in gravity that will slightly alter the velocity of the satellites and the distance between them.

Those measurements will be beamed back to Earth, where they'll be combined with existing data to produce a precise gravitational map of the moon ? information that will vastly increase our knowledge of a neighbor that's often taken for granted.

More than 100 scientific missions have targeted the moon since 1959. The Apollo program landed 12 people on its surface.

"You might think given all these observations that we know all there is to know about the moon. But that is not the case," said geophysicist Maria Zuber, the mission's principal science investigator. "We actually know more about Mars 100 million miles away than we do our own moon.... GRAIL is a journey to the inside of the moon."

Both GRAIL spacecraft launched aboard a rocket from Cape Canaveral, Fla., on Sept. 10. After separating, the solar-powered twins took the long route to the moon: 2.5 million miles, about 30 times the distance traveled by Apollo astronauts.

The extra time allowed the mission's single measurement tool ? an ultra-stable oscillator ? to be powered continuously and reach the proper temperature before reaching the moon's orbit.

On Saturday the GRAIL-A satellite neared the moon at about 750 mph. At 1:21 p.m. its rockets fired, and over the next 40 minutes the craft's velocity decreased by more than half, placing it into a stable orbit around the moon.

Its twin is expected to arrive later Sunday.

"Like all good twins, GRAIL-B will do exactly the same thing," Lehman said. "They arrive about 25 hours apart, which we believe is just enough time to get some breathing room between these important milestones."

Designer behind Apple's products knighted in UK (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Fans of the clean, inviting look of the iPhone, iPad and other blockbuster Apple products are legion, and that includes Queen Elizabeth II.

The British monarch has awarded a knighthood to Jonathan Paul Ive, a Brit and head of Apple Inc.'s design team since the mid-'90s.

Ive received a KBE, short for Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. The honor was announced Saturday for services to design and enterprise.

"To be recognized with this honor is absolutely thrilling and I am both humbled and sincerely grateful," Ive said in a statement. "I discovered at an early age that all I've ever wanted to do is design. I feel enormously fortunate that I continue to be able to design and make products with a truly remarkable group of people here at Apple."

Ive is credited with helping the late Steve Jobs bring the consumer-electronics company back from the brink of financial ruin in the late 1990s with his whimsical design for the iMac computer, which originally came in bright colors at a time bland shades dominated the PC world.

He later helped transform Apple into a consumer-electronics powerhouse and the envy of Silicon Valley with the iPod, the iPhone and, most recently, the iPad.

The knighthood is the second royal honor Ive has received. He was awarded a Commander of the British Empire honor in 2006 for achievements in British design and innovation.

Britain's honors are bestowed twice a year by the monarch ? at New Year's and on her official birthday in June. Recipients are selected by committees of civil servants from nominations made by the government and the public.

Most of the honors go to people who are not in the limelight, for services to community or industry, but they also reward a sprinkling of famous faces.

Oscar-nominated actress Helena Bonham Carter and music producer Steve Lillywhite were among those included with Ive in the queen's New Year honors list for 2012.

Ive started out far from Apple Inc.'s Cupertino headquarters. He grew up outside London and studied design at Newcastle Polytechnic (now Northumbria University) in Newcastle, England. After finishing school, he co-founded a London-based design company called Tangerine. There, he designed a range of products including combs and power tools. It was through Tangerine that he first got to work with Apple.

In 1992, while Jobs was still in the midst of a 12-year exile from Apple, Ive was hired as a senior designer.

After Jobs returned, he and Ive worked closely, ushering in products that are sleek and stylish, with rounded corners, few buttons, brushed aluminum surfaces and plenty of slick glass.

Apple's pride in this work is evident even in the packaging: Open up any iPhone box, for example, and see Apple proudly proclaim, "Designed by Apple in California." Six of Ive's works, including the original iPod, are part of the collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Design, as well as software that makes the gadgets easy to use, is a crucial part of setting Apple products apart from those of its rivals. Apple didn't make the first music player or smartphone, but it dominated the market by making ones that looked cool and worked well.

Now, Apple's products are more popular than ever, vaulting it past rival Microsoft Corp. in 2010 as the most valuable technology company in the world.
