Screen queen, golf kings get royal honours

LONDON | Sat Dec 31, 2011 12:00am GMT

LONDON Dec 31 (Reuters) - After playing the mother of Queen Elizabeth in "The King's Speech", actress Helena Bonham Carter will take part in a real-life royal performance when she receives an honour from the monarch herself.

The actress is among close to 1,000 people from all walks of life whose achievements are recognised in the annual New Year's Honours List.

Northern Irish golfers Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke, who won the U.S. and British opens this year, are also on the list, capping an outstanding year for UK golf.

Most of the people honoured with knighthoods or a variety of slightly lesser traditional titles such as Commander, Officer or Member of the Order of the British Empire (CBE, OBE and MBE), are unknown to the public.

Among them is former teenage drug dealer and gang member Chris Preddie, now 24, who renounced crime after his brother was shot dead and now campaigns against knife and gun crime among black youths in London.

Preddie is related to two brothers who murdered a 10-year-old boy in 2000, a crime that shocked Britain. The victim's father told British media he objected to Preddie being honoured with an OBE.

TV producer Peter Bazalgette, credited with popularising the "Big Brother" reality show format across the globe, will receive a knighthood - becoming Sir Peter - which may please legions of Big Brother fans but dismay critics who say the show is vulgar.

PALACE POMP

Novelist Penelope Lively, a past winner of the prestigious Booker Prize for her 1987 novel Moon Tiger, is also on the list. She becomes a "Dame", the female equivalent of a knighthood.

A rung down from a Dame with her CBE award, Bonham Carter received one of her two Oscar nominations for portraying Queen Elizabeth's mother in Oscar-winning film The King's Speech.

She will experience true royal pomp when she receives her award at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace next year, but she is no stranger to nobility, coming from an aristocratic family. Her great-grandfather, the Earl of Oxford and Asquith, served as prime minister under Elizabeth's grandfather, King George V.

Also honoured at a high point in a long career is golfer Clarke, who won the last British Open at the age of 42, on his 20th attempt. He will receive an OBE, one step down from CBE.

It was a particularly emotional win for Clarke, who has gone through hard times since losing his wife to cancer in 2006. He was the oldest winner of the Open since 1967 and the first home champion in 12 years.

McIlroy will have an MBE to show for his efforts during a rollercoaster year that saw him throw away victory at the U.S. Masters in April only to bounce back by clinching his first major at the U.S. Open in June.

At 22, McIlroy was the youngest winner of the championship since 1923.

Queen Elizabeth, whose sporting interests lie more in the world of horse-racing than of golf, does not draw up the Honours' List herself. Government officials seek out worthy recipients, who can also be nominated by members of the public.

Foul play suspected in Maine girl's disappearance

Police investigating the disappearance of a 20-month-old girl from her father's home two weeks ago said Friday they believe foul play was involved.

Waterville police Chief Joseph Massey announced Friday night the case "has evolved from the search for a missing child to a criminal investigation." In a statement, he said the conclusion was based on evidence gathered over the past two weeks. He didn't elaborate.

Ayla Reynolds was last seen on Dec. 16. Her father, Justin DiPietro, told police he put her to bed that night in his Waterville home. He reported her missing the following morning.

Police previously said they believed someone had taken the girl from the home. Police have received hundreds of tips as they've searched for her.

Ayla was wearing green pajamas with polka dots and the words "Daddy's Princess" on them and had a soft cast on her broken left arm. Extensive searches of woods, waterways, fields and private properties around Waterville, a city of 16,000 residents 20 miles north of Augusta, have failed to turn up anything.

Earlier Friday, police said DiPietro and Ayla's mother, Trista Reynolds, of Portland, were cooperating with investigators.

Investigators put up crime scene tape at the father's home last week, and two of the state's top homicide prosecutors were called in to get a look at the site. WABI-TV reported that a state police forensic team was back at the home on Friday.

Ayla was placed in her father's care while her mother was in a substance abuse rehabilitation program, which she has finished.

Trista Reynolds, making an appeal on national television on Thursday, said DiPietro has not returned her calls since their daughter went missing, and she asked him to reach out. On Friday, she had no further comment, her sister said.

DiPietro, addressing the public for the first time early last week, said in a statement he had "no idea what happened to Ayla or who is responsible." He said his family and friends would do "everything we can to assist in this investigation and get Ayla back home."

Former FBI profiler Clint Van Zandt said the odds of finding a child lessen if he or she isn't found within the first day or two of disappearing. But he said there's some reason for optimism because there are rare cases of missing children who turn up years later in someone's care.

"If you don't get this child back real quickly, you know that it gets harder and harder," he said. "But you can't give up hope."

Scott Bernstein, founder of Child Recovery International, a New York City-based organization that helps find missing children, agreed the first hours of an investigation are key in tracking down missing children as young as Ayla. Although the situation looks bleak, there's still room for hope, he said.

"One percent hope ? but I'll go for that 1 percent hope," he said.

After Ayla went missing, law enforcement officials likely divided their investigation into two parts, one team looking at people with access to her, such as relatives and family friends, and another group looking at the potential for an abduction by an outsider or stranger, Van Zandt said. Under both scenarios, he said, the odds are that the person who took Ayla knew her or her family.

Strangers' abductions of children do occur, but they're rare, accounting for only 105 to 115 children out of 750,000 to 900,000 missing-persons cases each year in the United States, Van Zandt said.

Van Zandt, who has worked similar cases, said Ayla's disappearance, which once had more than 80 searchers and law enforcement officers involved, has been difficult for law enforcers as well as for distraught family members.

"As an FBI agent working these cases, you never turn off the emotional porch light," he said. "You always leave on the light with the hope that the child will come home again."

Lugar: Paul not in GOP mainstream

Texas Rep. and presidential candidate Ron Paul is out of line with the mainstream GOP when it comes to foreign policy, Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.) says.

In an interview aired Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union," host Candy Crowley asked Lugar: "Is that a Republican party message?"

?

Replied the ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, "That's one Republican's message." And he?went on to say that Paul's left-of-Obama foreign policy views were not representative of the party.

?

"No, of course not. ?And it's not a message which really a president of the United States could ever afford to extend. In other words, we're a -- a party and a -- a president of leadership, leadership in the world," he said. "We have a fleet that covers all the seas, that, as a matter of fact, makes foreign trade possible, trade of all sorts. ?We're the only country that can go everywhere all over the world, and, therefore, indispensable to our allies as well as to our own interests."

?

"These are very, very important parts of our national strength. And they involve foreign policy. They involve armed forces and a combination of these," Lugar said.

UC Berkeley picks Google over Microsoft, talks why

UC Berkeley says Gmail faster, more flexible

The University of California in Berkeley has posted a full breakdown of a recent decision to pick Google's Gmail and Google Apps over Microsoft's Office 365 in what represented a changing of the guard. Although not an unambiguous win, Google pulled ahead by being free, taking a fast six to ten weeks to implement, and popular. Using its system would require much less of an overhaul than Microsoft's, Berkeley said, and majority of the students and staff alike already knew the apps.

Microsoft's system, by contrast, would have needed a much larger reworking of the university's infrastructure. It also wouldn't have supported multiple mail accounts, UC Berkeley said. There was also no home-friendly equivalent to Office 365, which is primarily intended for enterprise users.

Microsoft's primary advantages were in calendars, where those with very deep calendars would have an edge, and in security. Even then, however, Microsoft's advantages were generally smaller than expected. Either service could sync with mobile devices, although Google's services understandably have stronger Android support in addition to iPhones and Windows Phone. Microsoft doesn't yet support its syncing with the BlackBerry.

The Google win hasn't sat well with Microsoft, the university's Shelton Waggener said. It has been asking for changes to the report that would more closely favor its own point of view. The requests, if granted, wouldn't change the ultimate verdict.

Running Berkeley's main messaging and calendars is both a major coup for Google, which is still fighting to establish a reputation in the workplace for its web apps, as well as a symbolic defeat for Microsoft. The Windows developer was once considered unassailable for business and institutional deals, but the rise of the web has reduced the dependency on the local software still at Microsoft's core. Microsoft typically loses hundreds of millions of dollars each quarter in its online initiatives where Google is one of the most profitable. [via Wired, image via brainchildvn on Flickr]

Rhapsody soars past a million paying customers, president Jon Irwin shaves his head in celebration

Whatever Spotify can do, Rhapsody can do better? Not quite, but it's getting there. While the former cruised past 2.5 million paying customers last month, Rhapsody has just announced that it has "gone platnium." It's now serving a cool million paying subscribers, right on the heels of its ten-year anniversary. The company's delivering around ten million songs per day, while making itself available on over 60 devices. What's next? Well, president Jon Irwin has to grow his locks back (seriously!), and we're guessing it'll try to lock down a few more carrier partnerships as the months drag on. When pinged for comment, Billy Corgan said: "I'm on vacation."

Kindle Fire 6.2.1 update launches, brings Silk browser improvements (Digital Trends)

Mentioned two weeks ago by Amazon officials, the Internet company has started rolling out version 6.2.1 of the Kindle Fire software. Much of the user interface has been tweaked to become more responsive to screen tapping and navigation of content is much more fluid. The Silk browser is also smoother when moving through different Web pages and loading content. The update brings?customization to the tablet allowing users to hide items that appear on the?carousel as well as the ability to password protect?Wi-Fi access. By using a password on the device, tablet owners can prevent other users from purchasing content while browsing movies, books or other media.?To update your Kindle manually, connect to a Wi-Fi network and tap the Quick Settings icon in the upper right corner to find the ?Sync? option.?

Amazon-Kindle-FireThis update also?removes root privileges on tablets that have been rooted to replace the?operating system with custom firmware?as pointed out by Engadget. If a user is still using any Amazon software on a rooted tablet, they are?susceptible?to automatic updates when the device connects to any Wi-Fi network. Replacing the stock Amazon software with most forms of alternate software may void the warranty of the tablet and users are also likely to lose access to Amazon apps such as?Amazon Instant Video and the Lending Library feature. However, many developers creating software for rooted versions of the tablet have found the Kindle Fire relatively friendly when it comes to application development.?

According to a recent press release from Amazon, the Kindle Fire has been flying off the shelves and the company has sold about one million tablets per week during December. Amazon has also extended an offer of free two-day shipping on all Kindle models until?8 p.m. Pacific time on Dec. 21. This will allow any Kindle to arrive by December 23 and procrastinating Christmas shoppers will have enough time to receive the Kindle model on Friday to wrap it before the holiday on Sunday.?

Giving babies salty food may create a lifelong preference

Feeding young babies solid foods such as crackers, cereals and bread, which tend to be high in salt, may set them up for a lifelong preference for salt, researchers reported Tuesday.

The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggests that efforts to reduce salt intake among Americans should begin early in life.

It is even possible, the authors said, that infancy contains a "sensitivity window" in which exposure to certain foods and tastes programs the brain to desire them in the future.

Americans' fondness for salt, a source of dismay for health experts, is well known. A 2010 report from the Institute of Medicine concluded that the average intake of 3,436 milligrams a day for Americans over age 2 is more than double what is recommended, and that new government standards are needed to reduce the salt content in processed and restaurant food.

But little is known about the biology behind our love affair with salt. Researchers don't even know what receptors are involved in tasting it. And though babies are born with a clear preference for sweet foods and an absolute distaste for bitter foods, they appear indifferent to salt in the first few months of life, said Leslie Stein, the lead author of the study and a senior research associate at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia.

"When you give 2-month-old babies salt water, they have no facial expression," Stein said. "This could mean that the baby doesn't detect the salt or just doesn't give a hoot about it."

To get at the issue, Stein and her colleagues first gave 61 healthy 2-month-old infants a mild solution of salt water: Based on facial expressions and how much they drank, the authors concluded the infants indeed were indifferent to the taste.

When the babies were 6 months old, they were brought back to the Monell clinic by their parents. They were presented with three bottles containing water, a mild salt solution or a slightly saltier solution. Researchers recorded how much fluid they drank from each bottle during a one-minute period ? an indication of how much they preferred each solution.

Parents were also asked what, if any, baby food and table foods the children received. Table food is considered regular food that other members of the family might eat.

Almost half of the infants ? 26 ? had been exposed to starchy foods such as crackers, soft bread or cereal, which are often high in salt. During the bottle test, those babies consumed 55% more salt compared with babies who had not yet been exposed to these kinds of foods.

The scientists also reexamined 26 of the children at preschool age and surveyed their mothers about the children's salt preferences, such as whether they licked salt from foods, ate plain table salt or added salt to food before eating it. Children who had been exposed early to the starchy, salt-rich foods clearly had a greater liking for salt, they found.

"It's absolutely possible that exposure early on in life could change the way the salt taste signal is transmitted to the brain," said Dr. James F. Battey Jr., director of the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, which funded the study. "The brain is very plastic at that time of life."

The study doesn't prove this, however ? it merely shows a correlation between early exposure and a taste for salt later on, Battey added. But if it turns out to be true, "then parents have a way of reducing the risk," he said.

Research on infant feeding practices has shown that babies will learn to like a food if exposed to it at least 10 times. But that doesn't mean they prefer a food, Stein said; they just learn to tolerate it.

And, Stein said, studies have also shown that babies are learning about the flavors in Mom's diet even before birth, in the uterus, as well as afterward through the taste of their mother's breast milk.

"This very early exposure helps them learn to like those flavors as well," Stein said.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends mothers breast-feed exclusively for the first six months and continue to breast-feed even after introducing solid foods. Doctors usually recommend introducing solid foods to babies about 6 months of age, but there are few rules over which foods to introduce first and which to offer later.

A 1990 Dutch study showed persistently higher blood pressure for children whose early sodium consumption was highest, said Dr. Stephen R. Daniels, chief of pediatrics at Children's Hospital Colorado, who was not involved in the new study.

"We don't have as much science as we want or need about the best way to introduce babies to solid food," Daniels said. "There's a tremendous opportunity to think of the period during which a baby is being introduced to solid foods as a time to get babies and toddlers on the road to the most healthful diet."

Egyptian troops, protesters clash for 3rd day (AP)

CAIRO ? Troops and protesters clashed Sunday in Cairo for the third straight day, pelting each other with rocks in skirmishes near parliament in the heart of the Egyptian capital.

At least 10 protesters have been killed and 441 others wounded in the three days of violence, according to the Health Ministry. Activists say most of the 10 fatalities died of gunshot wounds.

Though the latest flare-up in violence involves a relatively small number of protesters, the clashes have added to the political tensions, with the pro-democracy activists behind the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak's autocratic regime 10 months ago accusing the generals of mismanaging the transition period and large scale human rights abuses.

Sunday's renewed violence was also taking place as unofficial results from a second round of voting in parliamentary elections showed Islamist parties, led by the Muslim Brotherhood, continuing their dominance at the polls.

The third and final round of voting is slated for next month in nine of Egypt's 27 provinces.

The Islamists have been staying clear of the recent violence, fearing that they could jeopardize their electoral gains by taking part in the protests. Their stance has prompted many activists to accuse them of political opportunism.

The clashes began early Friday when one of several hundred peaceful protesters staging a sit-in outside the Cabinet offices near parliament was detained and beaten by troops. The protesters began their sit-in three weeks ago to demand that the nation's ruling military, which took over after Mubarak's ouster by a popular uprising in February, immediately step down and hand over power to a civilian administration.

Sunday's clashes were taking place on a street close to Tahrir square, birthplace of the 18-day uprising that toppled Mubarak. The street, Sheik Rehan, is home to a campus of the American University in Cairo as well as a research center set up during the three-year occupation of Egypt by France in the late 18th century. The building was almost completely gutted by a fire which broke out during the height of the clashes on Saturday.

Protesters, who blame the fire on the troops, have been trying to salvage valuable books and documents from the center, whose two-story building is now in danger of collapsing.

Troops on Sunday erected a barrier to separate them from the protesters on Sheik Rehan street, but the two sides continued to hurl rocks at each other. Nearby streets have been sealed off by the army and some parts of the area were almost completely covered by debris, soot and rocks.

Troops have used the roofs of nearby state buildings to hurl rocks on the protesters Friday and Saturday.

The military has used a heavy hand in a bid to crush the most recent spasm of violence, according to video footage broadcast on regional TV stations and posted on social network sites. Soldiers have dragged female protesters by the hair, stripping at least one of her clothes, and kicked and beaten with batons other protesters who have been knocked to the ground. One widely circulating footage shows an army officer running toward protesters while firing a pistol at them. It is not clear from the footage whether he was using live ammunition.

Google employee creates the ultimate LAN party house, lives la vita local

You don't see many software engineers over on Cribs, but if you did, then Google employee Kenton Varda would probably be first in line. Some people buy fancy cars and hot tubs, Kenton created the ultimate LAN party room. Getting your crew round for a marathon Counter-Strike session might be a barrel, but tangled cables and weeding out connection problems are not, or at least Kenton clearly doesn't think so. No more cable spaghetti for him though, thanks to a permanent installation that includes machines, monitors, many feet of HDMI and USB leads, rack mounts and networking equipment for up to 12 gaming chums. Spread over two rooms, with six stations in each -- ideal for team games -- bespoke cabinets were made to keep it easy on the eye. Anyone wanting to take on a similar project can expect to put a $40,000 dent in their wallet, or a little more, depending on the size of your LAN.

(AP) ? A high school student in central India was recognized as the world's shortest woman by Guinness World Records on Friday as she turned 18, saying she hopes to earn a degree and make it in Bollywood.

Jyoti Amge stood just 62.8 centimeters (24.7 inches) tall ? shorter than the average 2-year-old ? when Guinness representatives visiting from London measured her at a ceremony attended by about 30 family and friends in the town of Nagpur, in Maharashtra state.

A teary-eyed Amge, dressed in one of her finest saris, called the honor an "extra birthday present" and said she felt grateful for being small, as it had brought her recognition. After receiving a plaque, she and her guests cut a birthday cake.

"I have put Nagpur on the world map. Now everyone will know where it is," said Amge, who says she dreams of one day becoming a Bollywood film star as well as pursuing a university degree after she finishes high school this year.

"I want to be an actor," she said.

She measured 7 centimeters (2.76 inches) shorter than the 22-year-old American Bridgette Jordan, who had held the title since September.

"Jyoti encourages us all to look beyond mere size and to just celebrate our differences," Guinness adjudicator Rob Molloy said.

This was not Amge's first Guinness record. Until Friday she was considered the world's shortest teenager, but in turning 18 qualified for the new title. She has grown less than 1 centimeter (0.4 inch) in the last two years, Guinness said in a statement, and will grow no more due to a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia.

Her teenage title brought the chance for multiple Guinness-sponsored trips to Japan and Italy for tours and meetings with other record holders, she said.

The title of shortest woman in history continues to be held by Pauline Musters, who lived in the Netherlands from 1876 to 1895 and stood 61 centimeters (24 inches) tall.

Toward a therapy to healing stroke

Wednesday, December 14, 2011

With 100 billion nerve cells, the brain is the most complex organ in the human body. "We want to understand the development program behind," says Dr. Steffen Scholpp from the ITG. "We want to find out how individual parts of the brain develop, this means, what makes precursor cells build a specialized area such as the thalamus." Scholpp's group at ITG studies the development of the thalamus. "It is the central interface between the brain and the outer world: Everything that is perceived via eyes, ears or the tactile sense has to pass the thalamus before it is routed to the cerebral cortex for further processing."

In the long term, the scientists want to be able to heal damaged brain parts by a tissue replacement therapy. If, for example, brain tissue is damaged after an infarct, is the body is not able to regenerate this tissue. "Today, stroke is the most frequent cause of disability acquired at adult age and due to its central role, damage of the thalamus is very serious," emphasizes Steffen Scholpp. "For this reason, we have to find a strategy to activate stem cells such that the damaged tissue can be replaced." Recently, an important step was made by the scientists: By studying zebrafish, they identified Lhx2 and Lhx9, the factors controlling the development of neurons in the thalamus. "Without these factors, the thalamus would accommodate undifferentiated nerve cells only ? this means, the precursory cells lack the information required for specialization," explains the biologist. Analysis of brain development in zebrafish allows conclusions to be drawn with respect to the development in all vertebrates, including human. The results of the group are published in the current issue of the PLoS Biology journal.

In the same study, Scholpp and his team identified another factor that acts as "adhesive" in the thalamus: The cell adhesion molecule Pcdh10b ensures development of the thalamus without mixing with the surrounding brain areas. If this factor is lacking, the neurons differentiate, but do not find their target destination. It is now the objective of the researchers to activate these factors in the cultivating dish (in vitro) in undifferentiated cells first for new thalamus tissue to form. In close cooperation with engineers, the biologists are already developing 2-dimensional cell culture systems. In January, they will start a 3D cell cultivation project. "KIT offers excellent opportunities: Parallel to our research, materials researchers work on the development of various biomaterials (biopolymers) which will be tested in the cultivation experiments", says Scholpp.

Dr. Steffen Scholpp thinks that it will be possible to heal stroke patients in the future. "Of course, this will take some years. But it is our ultimate goal to take out quiescent stem cells from a stroke patient and to switch on the specific development biology program in these cells outside of the body. Finally, we plan to bring them back to the position of the damaged tissue. This would be real healing."

Under the Emmy Noether program, the German Research Foundation (DFG) has granted funding in the amount of EUR 1.3 million to Dr. Steffen Scholpp for a duration of five years. The Emmy Noether program is designed to support young scientists in establishing an own working group. The team of Dr. Steffen Scholpp presently comprises one postdoctoral research fellow, three doctoral students, a technical employee, and two master students.

Inside Gaming: Japan Reconsiders Casinos, Vegas Revenue ...

Courtesy of Travel.NationalGeographic.com

Casinos may be decking their halls, but executives haven't gone home for the holidays, yet. Many casino operators are excited by the prospect of opening a property in Japan, now a possibility thanks to a new bill proposed by 150 Japanese legislators. Las Vegas casinos did well in October, posting double-digit revenue growth after two months of decline. And Majestic Star is celebrating a new start after two years of bankruptcy proceedings.

Japan Debates Casino Legalization

Tokyo's governor, Shintaro Ishihara, and Las Vegas Sands Corp. CEO Sheldon Adelson have been lobbying for years to bring Macau-style casinos to Japan. They couldn't assuage legislators' fears about fueling organized crime, but mounting tsunami-recovery expenses may have finally turned the tide. Last week, a group of 150 Japanese legislators from six political parties said they plan to introduce a bill next month that will allow the construction of casino resorts.

"There's more momentum and greater optimism than there has ever been in the past," said George Tanasijevich, the Sands' representative in Japan.

"It would be an engine for fiscal revival and job creation that wouldn't require raising taxes," said Takeshi Iwaya, one of the legislators behind the bill. The island nation is currently facing a 19 trillion yen ($244 billion) reconstruction effort after devastating March earthquake and tsunami.

A 2009 Osaka University study estimated that Japanese casinos could bring in $44 billion a year. Gambling is already a yearly $322 billion industry in Japan where bicycle, motorboat, motorcycle, and horse racing are big draws. So, too, are pachinko machines, a uniquely Japanese hybrid of slot and pinball machines. Until now, many lawmakers ignored the huge pachinko industry and talked about keeping Japan free of the evils of gambling, which they fear will quickly be exploited by organized crime. Others have pointed to Singapore's success in earning gambling dollars from tourists while discouraging locals from playing.

The world's major casino operators are all hoping for a piece of the action if Japan passes casino legislation. Adelson is confident that the Sands will be first. "We've been lobbying there for years," he said. "There's no doubt that we're the leading candidate." Genting Singapore Plc, MGM Resorts International, Caesars Entertainment Corp., Wynn Resorts Ltd., and Melco Crown Entertainment Ltd. also have their eyes on the Japanese market.

Las Vegas Leads Nevada to 8.1 Percent October Gaming Growth

After two months of revenue decline, Nevada casinos posted a win in October. State casinos earned $960.7 million in October, an 8.1 percent gain on 2010 monthly revenues, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board. As usual, Las Vegas properties led the rest of the state in year-over-year growth. Strip casinos showed a 13.3 percent revenue increase, an even more significant sign of recovery considering that 2010's returns were 16.1 percent above October 2009. It's the first time since the economic downturn that the Strip has had double-digit revenue growth for a month in two consecutive years.

Las Vegas is benefiting from a slow national trend of recovery as U.S. tourists start returning to Vegas and spending more at the tables. The number of conventions in the city is also rising. October in particular was a strong month for baccarat spending, driven partly by Chinese Golden Week. MGM Resorts International, which sees the most baccarat action on the strip, gained the most from the 74.3 percent increase in year-over-year baccarat revenue. An Indy car race and a UFC fight at Mandalay Bay also helped fill rooms and tables. Sports betting was down 13.7 percent due to almost $1 million decline in football betting winnings, possibly caused by Kathy Liebert's new interest in football.

The rest of Nevada is not benefiting from the same trends. Laughlin's monthly revenue dropped 2.9 percent from 2010, a small loss compared to the 9.3 percent hit to Washoe County, which includes Reno, Sparks, and North Lake Tahoe. By itself, Reno fell 12.3 percent. Outside of Clark County, only the Boulder Strip saw a significant revenue increase.

Nevada took in $65.4 million in gaming tax revenue for October, an 8.6 percent increase from October 2010. Total gaming tax revenue for the fiscal year through October is still down 2.4 percent.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal and VegasInc.com both have more analysis.

Majestic Star Out of Bankruptcy $500 Million Lighter

Majestic Star Casino LLC has survived bankruptcy organization and come out on the other side after two years with new ownership and $500 million less in debt. The Las Vegas-based company owns properties in Tunica, Mississippi; Black Hawk, Colorado; and Gary, Indiana. A fund managed by Wayzata Investent Partners LLC is the largest stakeholder of the new company, Majestic Holdco LLC.

"We are emerging from Chapter 11 with a strengthened balance sheet and the ability to compete more effectively in our respective markets," said Majestic Star COO Mike Darley.

As part of the bankruptcy settlement, senior secured noteholders received about 52 percent of their loan amounts, and senior noteholders received equity in the company worth about 25 percent of their loans.

Majestic Star, which once owned Fitzgeralds in downtown Las Vegas, was founded in 1993 by Don Barden, who passed away in May.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal has all the details on the legal proceedings.

Nanoparticles help researcher deliver steroids to retina

ScienceDaily (Dec. 13, 2011) ? Hitching a ride into the retina on nanoparticles called dendrimers offers a new way to treat age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa. A study by investigators at Mayo Clinic, Wayne State University and Johns Hopkins Medicine shows that steroids attached to the dendrimers target the damage-causing cells associated with neuroinflammation, leaving the rest of the eye unaffected and preserving vision.

The findings appear in the journal Biomaterials.

Dry age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa are caused by neuroinflammation, which progressively damages the retina and can lead to blindness. Macular degeneration is the primary cause of vision loss in older Americans, affecting more than 7 million people, according to the National Institutes of Health. Retinitis pigmentosa encompasses many genetic conditions affecting the retina and impacts 1 in 4,000 Americans, the NIH estimates.

"There is no cure for these diseases," says Mayo Clinic ophthalmologist Raymond Iezzi, M.D., a lead author of the study. "An effective treatment could offer hope to hundreds of millions of patients worldwide."

Iezzi and fellow principal author Rangaramanujam Kannan, Ph.D., an ophthalmology professor at The Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins, developed an intracellular, sustained-release drug delivery system. The research, conducted in part at Wayne State University's Kresge Eye Institute with collaboration from Wayne State's College of Engineering and Ligon Research Center of Vision, tested the dendrimer delivery system in rats that develop neuroinflammation.

The target was microglial cells, inflammatory cells in charge of cleaning up dead and dying material in the eye, Dr. Iezzi says. When activated as "trash collectors," the cells cause damage via neuroinflammation -- a hallmark of each disease. The microglial cells gobble up the dendrimers, and the drug then shuts down the cells' activity.

"Surprisingly, the activated microglia in the degenerating retina appeared to eat the dendrimer selectively, and retain them for at least a month. The drug is released from the dendrimer in a sustained fashion inside these cells, offering targeted neuroprotection to the retina," Kannan says.

The treatment reduced neuroinflammation in the rat model and protected vision by preventing injury to photoreceptors in the retina. Though the steroid offers only temporary protection, the treatment as a whole provides sustained relief from neuroinflammation.

The study was funded by grants from the Ligon Research Center of Vision at Wayne State University, the Ralph C. Wilson Foundation and Research to Prevent Blindness.

Co-authors include Bharath Raja Guru, Ph.D., Case Western Reserve University; Inna Glybina and Alexander Kennedy, both of Wayne State University; and Manoj Mishra, Ph.D., of Johns Hopkins University.
